August 2011 | Otakuthon !
|
Shidokan was invited to participate in this year’s anime convention: “Otakuthon”. The event took place at the Montreal Congress Palace. It was a great opportunity for our members to share the wonders of kendo with many potential kendoka, giving them the opportunity to try a few hits. It sure was fun.

August 2011 | Mini Kendo Tournament
|
In order to better implement our training and give our junior members the opportunity to experience ‘combat pressure’ in real time, we organized a Mini kendo tournament.
It was a great experience for all of us; our junior members were exposed to pressure in combat, shiai rules and etiquette. It was also a great opportunity for our senior members to sharpen their judging skills being able to recognize an ippon very confidently. |

We’ll continue to perform this type of training in future opportunities, since it’s quite benefitial for our dojo. Congratulations to Juan Francisco Leyva who ended up as our champion that night.

It’s summer time! Therefore our Kendo and Iaido members decided to prepare a good old Shidokan BBQ.

August 2011 | Kendo Demo at St-Laurent High
|
Last January Shidokan members were invited to perform a small Kendo demo at St-Laurent High School. We are very thankful for the kind invitation and we hope this was a great motivation for younger generations of potential kendoka.

Shidokan members have been training hard during the whole summer under the guidance of Santoso Sensei, bearing the extreme heat of the summer in Montreal.
We have been strengthening our ties with our fellow kendoka and brothers from other clubs, enjoying training together.. and lots of beer. |

May 2011 | Summer Season begins !

Training never stops ! Shidokan starts the new spring/summer season with new members and great motivation !
Santoso Sensei is very happy with the dojo achievements, always reminding us that even though, medals and trophies are great stimulus, for a kendoka the most important goal is never to lose the will to progress, rather we face defeat or victory, the true spirit is never to give up. |

May 2011 | Shidokan at Granby
|
On May 7th we attended the Granby Kendo Tournament and achieved remarkable results again. Benjamin Vial obtained the silver medal in the mudansha division which is a great result, made even more notable by the fact that it was his first tournament. Gabriel Schor achieved the bronze medal allowing Shidokan to capture two out of first three places.
All our Kendoka also performed very well and gave everything they had with honor and great spirit. |

We were also very happy to witness the first shiai in the san-dan and higher division in which Mike was involved. We are definitely moving up. Confirming our club great fighting spirit Juan was awarded the Fighting Spirit award.

Our inmense gratitude to Santoso Sensei for his patience and dedication, and to the unconditional support of our dear members who joined us for mitori-geiko, (training by watching), witnessing the performances of higher ranking kenshi, gaining a better understanding of how the competitions work and what is the level that is required to do well in such a competition.

February 2011 | Visit of D'Orangeville Sensei and Marko Sensei

Shidokan members have been very lucky to receive the visit of Christian d'Orangeville Sensei (McGill Kendo Club) and Paul Marko Sensei (Etobicoke, ON) .
We want to express our gratitude for their time, kindness and patience. D'Orangeville Sensei showed us some advanced techniques, always reminding us to enjoy kendo; an advice that will be certainly followed. |

Marko Sensei was kind enough to lead our tuesday and saturday training, working on different aspects of our basics and showing us the way to improve our technique, here are some of his thoughts:
"I would say that my biggest issues in Kendo have arisen when I have not paid enough attention to the basics (e.g., footwork, kiai, posture, reigi). Everybody says it, but only because it is true. As an adult Kendoka (I started at 29 years), I find that progressing to higher levels of Keiko is always either held back or supported by the level of basics needed by the advanced techniques (mental or physical). So never ignore them! "

February 2011 | Iaido Seminar by Ohmi Sensei and Cruise Sensei

Shidokan hosted a wonderful seminar led by Goyo Ohmi Sensei (JCCC) and Stephen Cruise Sensei (Etobicoke).
Starting early at 9am with basic excercises Ohmi Sensei and Cruise Sensei went over every specific aspect of the fundamentals from good posture to proper angle of cut. It was a magnificent display of skill and accuracy seeing such masters performing. |

The seminar continued the whole day until 4pm. Working on all the kata with body exhaustion everybody showed great courage and determination, motivated by the enthusiasm and patience of our masters.

We had many things to celebrate this year !! Our annual brunch was a wonderful gathering for every Shidokan member. This year not everybody could be there, but their "ki' was with us. We took the opportunity to celebrate the success of Shidokan through 2010, Tournaments, Gradings, Seminars... The growth of our Club. |

It was also a wonderful occassion to celebrate Santoso Sensei's birthday, As Funamoto Sensei's students before us, we had the privilege of celebrating our Chief Instructor's birthday with him.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all Shidokan members that participated in the different events around Canada: Grading at Toronto for Kendo and Iaido, and also the Kendo Tournaments of Quebec and Toronto. (Granby, McGill, JCCC)
It sure has been a great year for Shidokan, we have grown in experience thanks to the guidance of Santoso Sensei and Dean Taisho; We have re-enforced our friendship with dojo(s) around Quebec; This year we have also had the opportunity to meet honorable Shidokan members such as Valiquette Sensei, Tsuji Sensei and Matsuura Sensei - Gratitude for your teachings and recommendations, the heritage of Funamoto Sensei. |

September 2010 | A new Beginning

We'd like to take this opportunity to give a warm welcome to our new members!!, we know that sometimes we focus a lot in practice practice practice.. (which is quite important..) September 2010 | Summer Memories
|
We had a great summer season. We practiced for hours at a time on sweltering heat increasing our skill and stamina. We attended the University of Toronto Kendo competition and grading and we were very happy that we all passed the grading exams that we took.
We decided to train even harder and obtained even better results at the Montreal McGill Kendo Taikai. Some of our members, encouraged by their progress throughout the summer, also decided to experience competition for the first time. |

|
|
|
|
So are our practices. In the beginning they seem to be very hard. But with effort and perseverance we manage to overcome the heat, the pain and overcome our own worst enemy: ourselves.
It's been a great summer: our dear Senior members living outside Quebec came to visit us , More members joined our Bogu ranks, we have been enjoying summer with sunshine, good drinks and now as fall season starts we are eager to pick up where we left off.

We can’t wait to meet the new students that will join us and continue to practice together. There will be more competitions and grading in the fall and we hope to do even better and have more of our members experience the excitement of both.

August 2010 | Iaido Seminar by Ohmi Sensei and Cruise Sensei

After a long but rewarding day at the McGill Taikai, last sunday Shidokan hosted a Iaido Seminar. The Seminar was given by CKF Masters Goyo Ohmi and Stephen Cruise.
The Seminar started was focused on Seitei Iai. Both Ohmi Sensei and Cruise Sensei are outstanding Masters and their guidance is much appreciated. They showed us the proper way to keep a good height and project a strong seme when performing the cuts, among many other important aspects. They emphazised on the importance of Kihon in every practice. |

August 2010 | McGill Taikai, Shidokan Champion : Tong DinhOSU !!! OMEDETO GOZAIMASHITA TONG-KUN !In a marvelous display of courage and perseverance Shidokan team performed very well at the last McGill Taikai. Always aiming to improve and correct past mistakes. June 2010 | Toronto, Grading and Tournament

On June 4th, 8 of our members travelled to Toronto. On Saturday we participated in the annual University of Toronto Kendo Tournament. All 8th of competed in the individual round in the morning.
In the afternoon we split our group in two and with the help of our friends from McGill University we competed in the team round. We fought bravely and with dignity. We can definitely feel our improvement and shall work hard in everything that needs to be corrected with the guidance of Santoso Sensei. |

On Sunday 5 of our members went for grading, two for Ikyu, one for Shodan and two for Nidan. We were very happy when we found out that all of us passed the exam and acquired the above mentioned grades.

|
|
|
|
This was a great trip and we hope to take more similar trips in the future, OSU !!

May 2010 | Granby Kendo Tournament, Quebec
|
It's always a pleasure to participate at the Granby Kendo Championship in Quebec. This time it was a wonderful ocassion for the Shidokan team.
After a long day participating in their own categories for the individuals, the Shidokan team took part in the teams category and was able to obtain the bronze medal after a round of matches against the Quebec Kendo Kai team. Congrats Shidokan ! Please let this achievement motivate everybody to keep improving ! |

April 2010 | Iaido Seminar by Stephen Cruise SenseiLast March 27th Shidokan hosted a Iaido Seminar at John Abbot College. The Seminar was given by CKF Muso Shinden Ryu Sensei Stephen Cruise. The Seminar started on the 27th with the Seitei Iai and on the 28th with Koryu. Cruise Sensei is an outstanding Master and his guidance is much appreciated. Cruise Sensei showed the proper way to keep a good height and project a strong seme when performing the cuts, among many other important aspects.

March 2010 | Gilles Valiquette Sensei visits ShidokanWhen Funamoto Sensei founded Shidokan, the first student who knocked that door was Gilles Valiquette...Having been practicing Kendo for 35 years and being considered the most Senior Kendoka in Quebec, Valiquette Sensei keeps alive the Spirit and teachings of his master and last February 16th he honored us by joining and leading our Tuesday training. Valiquette Sensei emphasized the importance of solid basics and gave the us a great opportunity to practice his approach to more advanced techniques.

Feb 2010 | Lawrence Tsuji Sensei visits ShidokanWe can not express our gratitude to Lawrence Tsuji Sensei (Toronto JCCC), who was kind enough to lead a special class for our club last January 16th 2010. Tsuji Sensei, Santoso Sensei and Dean Senpai trained together at Shidokan under the guidance of Funamoto Sensei many years ago and for us is an honor that a former member of our club comes to visit us and help us improve in our Kendo. Tsuji Sensei shared some important thoughts with us :" Thanks to Santoso and to all the Shidokan members for the practice on Saturday, January 16th. It was a pleasure to be at Shidokan after so many years. The physical location does not matter so much (the old place on de Maisonneuve to the Tri-Star gym on Jean Talon and now at Concordia's Loyola campus); the spirit of the club is with its members and the collective passion for kendo. I cannot express enough how happy I am to see the Shidokan kendo club doing so well. I especially liked the enthusiasm shown by everyone during the practice.
At this time, please allow me to make three main comments:
The final thought that I would like to leave with everyone is something that I heard from another sensei many years ago. There is a saying that can apply to kendo. In Japanese, it is Tadashiku, Tanoshiku, Nakayoku. Loosely translated in English, it means: With correctness/properly, With enjoyment, By working together/getting along. I stressed some aspects of kendo etiquette at the end of Saturday's class because it is important to remember that kendo is a martial art and not just stick fighting. Further to that, the proper kendo manner is meant to foster the respect and understanding between individuals so that kendo practice has meaning. Most importantly though: Have Fun!

November 21st 2009 | Women's Kendo seminarLast Saturday Shidokan’s Chieko Kosaka and Ewelina Lajch participated in the Women’s Kendo Seminar give by Ariyama Sensei from the Montreal Kendo Club.We thank Ariyama Sensei for giving this great opportunity to our female members. It was a great experience for them, interacting with members from other clubs and learning new tricks that hopefully they’ll share with us. This is a special seminar reserved for women only. The main purpose of this seminar is to improve the level of female kendoka in a safe and friendly environment. June 21st 2009 | McGill TaikaiSome of Shidokan senior members participated in the McGill 2009 Kendo Tournament.It was a great opportunity to meet highly skilled kendo players from Canada and the US. We re-enforced our friendship with the clubs here in Montreal, made new friends and also met old ones. We would like to take this opportunity to greet Mr Lawrence Tsuji, one of the most senior Shidokan sempais who nowadays trains at the JCCC in Toronto. April 10th 2009 | Shidokan Spring Break !After a non-stopping period, Shidokan members take a lil' break to heal those Kendo injuries.We'll take this opportunity to relax, rest and be ready to come back for an intense 2009 Spring and Summer season ! September 6th 2008 | GodokeikoDear friends, Senseis and kendokas from Québec and Ottawa:Tuesday, September 23rd at 18h00, the Montreal Kendo Club and the Shidokan Kendo and Iaido Club will be pleased to receive the visit of Hamaguchi-sensei, 8th dan from the Osaka University Kendo Club, Japan. Senseis and kendokas (1st dan and up) from Québec and Ottawa are invited to join us and take part in a Godogeiko with about thirty kendoka from the university of Osaka. Please confirm the number of participants from your dojo to this special evening. After the practice, it is planned to have dinner in a Korean restaurant located near the Concordia University gymnasium.
